Time for the aftermath HUOM! suomenkielinen teksti alla

That’s it – the Ironman of Kalmar is over and done with, and I feel spectacular about the race. I reached my goal of completing the race in less than 11 hours. It still seems incredible!

The weeks leading up to the race felt long. Two weeks before the D-Day, while doing my bike training, I already wished that the contest had been that day already. Good thing it wasn’t, as it was a bad day. My legs were cramping from all the training and my energy levels weren’t the greatest possible.

I’m not sure what kind of mental preparation I had conducted before the race, but I wasn’t nearly as nervous during the Ironman as I had expected. I had also figured that being nervous would deplete my energy levels, not increase them. Thus I kept my mind under control as much as I could. During the race week I only had a couple of training sessions planned and the travels to Kalmar. The day before the contest I was in pretty a low mood, with aches in my calf and a sore throat. On the morning of the race the calf pain had metamorphosed into hip pain, which I figured would subside during swimming. I slept well the night before the race and woke up with more energy than I had on many earlier mornings. That probably comes as no surprise.

We kicked off the morning with breakfast at 4 a.m., and then transferred to the bike station to install drink bottles on the bicycles. We then went to the beach to put on wetsuits and to do a couple of test strokes in the water.

And after that: BANG BANG!

On the way to Kalmar, in Gamleby

The start to the swimming was truly something. The departing groups had been placed horizontally along a pier, with the first buoy placed 400 meters away. You can guess what happens when 2,000 racers rush to the water simultaneously and the first turn occurs 400 meters later – not good things. There was a true riot going on. A couple of hundred meters into the race I started feeling slightly anxious, but managed to calm myself down soon enough. I was constantly getting slammed on some part of my body and once on my teeth too, though the polite man immediately apologized – of course he was Swedish!

Whenever I managed to pick up my swimming speed, I even enjoyed myself and was happy seeing the sun poking around the sky. The swimming section was by no means easy; we’ve heard that from everyone, even experienced Tri-veterans. At 3.96 km, it was also too long. The route will be changed for next year. The swimming chaos and the near drowning of one person (who on Monday was still at the Intensive Care Unit so not dead as of yet, at least) served as a wake-up call to the organizers, fortunately. Here’s to hoping for a cleaner swim next year.

The hustle and bustle of swimming

From the swimming it was off to the bike saddle: we were expecting to ride against the wind for most of the way. At the Race Brief they told us the wind might reach 10-15 meters per second. It only felt like that once we reached the island of Öland, where the wind blew against us and from the side. At some point my speed dropped down to 24km/hour, but I decided not to fight with the headwind but instead save my strength for the tailwind section. Once there, I even managed to increase my speed to more than 40 km/hour.

The worst part mentally was at the 90th kilometer, when the tailwind gave way to heavy crosswinds. At that point I attempted to remember the power tips given by my friends and that helped me keep going. They don’t call the Ironman a mind game for no reason. The rest of the biking went beyond well and I reached the running station quicker than I had expected.

Biking on up

The running felt really good in the beginning, up until the 20th kilometer. After that started the more cumbersome phase of heading toward the final sprint. But I didn’t let go of coach Merja’s words from Joroinen. Her message was simple: relax. I repeated that in my head from one kilometer to the next to keep my anxiety at bay. And in all its simplicity, it worked!

I believe that doing well in the running section of the Joroinen half challenge and finding that relaxed pace of running was what saw me through the Ironman in Kalmar. My knees and thighs were screaming in pain, but I told them to stay calm. At the 30 kilometer mark was when my stomach started growling for the first time during the race. I got into a portable toilet and enjoyed the brief moment of sitting down for a while, though I could have done so for even longer. But seeing the rest of the contest through was occupying my mind, so up, out and toward the goal I went. Lucky me, the finish line came across quicker than I had expected, even though my running felt and looked cumbersome.

Round 1 of running

Energy burst at the final stretch

Overall the Ironman went really well on my part. In my wildest estimates I had told a few people, that everything would really need to go according to plan for me to finish the race in less than 11 hours. And on Saturday, everything did.
"I'm an Ironman"

It was a brave race on my part, but not to a point of excess – I still took the time to listen to myself. Aside from the running, at the end of each section I thought to myself, “Was this it?” The running part I did pull off with the last bits of my strength.

There are several reasons why I would say the race was a success for me. The most important of those, I would say, was that the amount of rest was adequate. I consciously focused on that during the last month. I didn’t start rushing around, but gave myself time to recover and rest. This is a message I want to extend to other people too, should it be at all possible with everything else you’ve got going on.

All the races of the summer were great practice for the Ironman Saturday, taking my speed and physical condition forward.

The post-race feeling of flow was incredible, even though I was so tired. But the tiredness I felt then was nothing compared to how I would feel the coming week.

On Tuesday when I was supposed to go to work, I couldn’t get out of bed. I was thinking this didn’t feel like regular tiredness and muscle weakness. I measured my temperature, of which there was plenty already at the start of the day. During the day my fever shot up to 39.4 Fahrenheit and I was drowsier than I had ever been before in those temperatures. I slept more hours than I had in however long I can remember. On Wednesday, when my fever was still high, I went to the doctor who ordered some lab tests to be done. The examined this whole woman from head to toe. Luckily they didn’t find anything major wrong with me. I was diagnosed with sudden tonsillitis and a lack of potassium. I got the meds, went home and got a week’s sick leave from work.

Feeling hazy and feverish for a week got me thinking of my own health and its importance, pushing the whole Ironman experience to the backburner. Again my thoughts became clearer on how nothing is more important than taking care of your health, as that enables you to take care of others too. I couldn’t think of much else for a whole week - something different for a change.

I am thankful I survived the Ironman with as little sickness as I did and the post-race flow can continue a while longer, as I haven’t had time to enjoy it much yet.

The best feeling for me comes from making my wishes come true and reaching my goals. Quite a few people took it as a joke when I told them my plans to complete the Ironman, and in less than 11 hours. I decided to not let that get to me, but instead believe in myself.

The fact that I reached my goal is proof enough that visualizing helps make dreams come true. I made a tentative plan for how to reach that dream. Here’s approximately what it looked like:

1) Be your own leader
2) Do things that feel right for you
3) Believe in yourself and your goals

If I hadn’t set these goals and dreams, I don’t think I would have completed the Ironman race in less than 11 hours. Visualizing the outcome gave me direction, strength and above all, confidence. I truly recommend visualization for everyone who has his or her goals set high. It’s worth it!

I want to thank my friends and family for joining me on my first Ironman project! I’ve gotten tons of strength from all of your pep talks and congratulations and from knowing that people are being there for me. Big thanks for that!

I also want to send a big thank you to my coach, Merja, for seeing this project through even if you didn’t expected these kinds of results from me.  It’s amazing to surprise someone in a positive way!

Feeling emotional at the goal post

The most beautiful message that I received before the race came from my dear aunt and I’d like to post it here as a memory: “Good luck for tomorrow’s attempt that among other things requires good physical condition, strength of mind and perseverance. So no worries, as you’ve got all of those, dear Hanna. So go for it. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for you. :)”

This ends my Ironman season. Thank you everyone for traveling along this journey with me!

Juoksun 1. kierros
Loppuspurtit maalisuoralla
Kaiken kaikkiaan kisa meni omalta kohdaltani erittäin hyvin. Itse olin hulluimmissa arvioinneissa sanonut muutamille, että kaiken pitää mennä todella nappiin, jos aion pystyä alittamaan 11 tunnin rajapyykin. Ja lauantaina kaikki meni nappiin.

I'm an Ironman

Omalta kohdaltani voisin arvioida kisan menneen monestakin syystä hyvin. Kaikkein tärkeimmäksi kuitenkin nostaisin levon määrän. Siihen keskityin tietoisesti viimeisen kuukauden ajan.

Kiitos kaikille mukana kulkeneille!
